Winter...3 of 3

Winter brought a sense of death to many people. All the trees are bare. Many of them left with no bark at the base from deer finding it to be, many times, the only meal they could find. I always thought of it as nature taking a break. It was more of a resting and sleep time. Many people grow very depressed during it. (ive had my share) But my absolute favorite was when we would have a very thick snow and once it was all settled I would walk out on my porch and see one of the most beautiful sights. A complete white blanket.

I would love how the snow would stick to every branch of every tree I could see. This made growing up surrounded by the woods special to me. The smell in the air was almost like water, but chilled. You can get the same effect by smelling an ice cube! What I loved most though....was the complete stillness and silence. You could easily hear a pin drop. I would lay out all kinds of bird seed and watch the bright male cardinals engulfing as much as they could. Now and then I would find a blue jay bullying the rest of the birds for this scarce treat I had given them. I buy huge bags of the cheap cat food and dump it out every day on a clear piece of tarp for the raccoons and opossum and of course all the poor cats who didnt have a home.
It was fun to relax on the porch, drinking my hot chocolate and watch the deer licking the blocks of salt I left in the back yard for them and all the straw I laid down so they could lay in a dry warm spot if they wished.

I miss how at night with the snow and the moon it was never dark. When this would happen and it would be snowing Id put warm clothes on and grab my sled. It was some of the best fun Id ever had. My siblings and I would make snow men and my mom would come out with hot chocolate and a bunch of spray bottles filled with colored water so we could spray the snowmen in different colors. I would go out front to our gravel road (that didnt get shoveled due to the fact that we were far from county limits) and pack up snow mounds that I could jump with my 4 wheeler or my Odyssey...usually pulling a sled behind with a sibling of my choice.

And the christmas lights!!! You have never seen christmas until youve seen it with snow! I miss winter back home.
